In the early hours of Friday, armed men invaded St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, abducting pupils, students, teachers, and a security personnel who was shot during the attack.
The raid, which occurred between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on 21 November 2025, threw the school community into fear and distress as the assailants forcefully whisked away an undisclosed number of victims.
In a press statement signed on Friday by the Diocesan Secretary, Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora strongly condemned the attack and expressed deep concern for the safety of the kidnapped children, staff, and their families.
Fr. Joseph said security agencies were immediately notified and have commenced coordinated operations to secure the release of the victims. He added that the Bishop and leadership of the Diocese are actively working with security operatives, community leaders, and relevant government authorities to ensure a swift rescue.
The Diocese urged the public to remain calm, support the efforts of security agencies, and continue to pray for the safe return of the abducted.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of children and promised to release further updates as verified information becomes available.
“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,” the statement added.
