APC 8th National Convention: Transparent, Inclusive Process Reflects Party’s Core Values — AATSG Chairman Says

The National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has positioned as a crucial test of the ruling party’s internal strength and commitment to democratic ideals, according to stakeholders.
Speaking at the event on Friday in Abuja, the National Chairman of the Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu Support Group (AATSG), Dr. Abayomi Odunowo, said the convention served as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, promising a transparent and inclusive process that reflects the APC’s core values.
Odunowo expressed optimism that the convention would not only be “thrilling and entertaining” but also boost public confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he said has surpassed expectations, including among Nigerians in the diaspora.
He noted that the ruling party remains focused on delivering its campaign promises, assuring citizens of improved governance outcomes following the convention.
While acknowledging prevailing economic challenges, Odunowo attributed them to global economic pressures, stressing that Nigeria is not isolated from worldwide trends. He, however, expressed confidence that conditions would improve in the near term.
Addressing concerns over the wave of defections into the APC, Odunowo dismissed fears of a drift toward a one-party state, describing political realignments as a normal feature of democratic systems.
“Freedom of association is a constitutional right. If individuals choose to leave their parties for another platform they believe offers better prospects, that is democracy in action,” he said, adding that opposition claims of democratic erosion are unfounded.
On governance, he maintained that criticism remains a vital component of democracy, noting that the current administration is open to constructive feedback and has demonstrated responsiveness to national challenges.
Highlighting achievements, Odunowo pointed to strides in education, infrastructure, and healthcare, including expanded access to schooling and ongoing investments in road construction and medical facilities nationwide.
He, however, acknowledged that longstanding developmental gaps may limit public perception of progress, underscoring the need for more effective communication of government efforts.
The APC National Convention is expected to convene key stakeholders from across the federation, setting the tone for the party’s strategic direction and reinforcing its role in shaping Nigeria’s political and developmental trajectory.
