NOSDRA, Operation Delta Safe Strengthen Joint Response to Oil Spill Emergencies in Niger Delta
The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to deepen collaboration with the military in tackling environmental degradation caused by oil spills and illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta.
During a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the South-South Joint Task Force, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), in Igbogene, Yenagoa, a NOSDRA delegation led by Field Head, Engr. Ukpenevi Solomon, emphasized the importance of inter-agency synergy in protecting critical ecosystems and host communities.
The Director General of NOSDRA, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, who was represented at the meeting, commended OPDS for its sustained role in curbing crude oil theft and vandalism, noting that such criminal activities remain major causes of oil spills and environmental damage in the region.
Rear Admiral N. M. Madugu, Commander of Operation Delta Safe, received the delegation alongside senior military officers, paramilitary representatives, and officials of the Nigerian Air Force. He welcomed the strengthened collaboration, stressing that environmental security is fundamental to national security and economic stability.
Discussions during the interactive session centered on:
Enhancing joint operational strategies to improve oil spill response efficiency,
Intensifying intelligence sharing to detect and prevent environmental crimes,
Establishing a coordinated emergency response framework,
Protecting host communities and restoring degraded environments.
Both agencies pledged to sustain the partnership and work towards faster response timelines to oil spill incidents, particularly in high-risk areas.
The visit was rounded off with a group photograph, symbolizing renewed cooperation in safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainable development across the Niger Delta.
