AIG Ochalla Clears Medical Bills of Indigent Patients, Reinforces Police’s Humanitarian Role in Lagos
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, Mrs Margaret Ochalla, has provided relief to indigent patients in Lagos by settling their outstanding medical bills, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to compassion and community service.
Ochalla, on Friday, led members of her management team on a humanitarian outreach to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, and the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, where she paid the hospital bills of several patients, including a newborn awaiting surgery whose treatment had been delayed due to financial constraints.
The outreach, according to the AIG, was designed to identify with vulnerable patients and ease the burden faced by families struggling to afford medical care during hospitalisation.
Beyond settling medical bills, Ochalla and her team also donated essential gift items to patients in various wards, a gesture that brought renewed hope and relief to beneficiaries and their families.
Speaking during the visit, the AIG said the responsibilities of the Nigeria Police Force extend beyond crime control and investigations, stressing that effective policing must be rooted in humanity, empathy and service to the people.
She explained that the initiative was aimed at fostering goodwill, strengthening public confidence, and demonstrating that the Police Force genuinely cares about the welfare of Nigerians.
“Effective policing is anchored on compassion and service. We must continually seek ways to positively impact lives, build trust, and maintain respectful relationships with the communities we serve,” Ochalla said.
She emphasised that the Police Force remains committed to partnership with the public, describing the Police as a friend of the community, while noting that the outreach aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, which prioritises community engagement, professionalism, empathy and public trust.
Ochalla also commended medical personnel at FMC Ebute-Metta and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital for their dedication to patient care, describing their service as critical to saving lives and supporting vulnerable Nigerians.
Management and staff of both health facilities expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, describing it as timely, impactful and a clear demonstration of the Police Force’s commitment to community service beyond its statutory duties.
