Traders at the Nnewi main market, popularly known as Agbedo Market, will not be displaced despite ongoing renovations, the Nnewi-North Local Government Council has assured.
Council Chairman, Mr. Echezona Anazodo, gave the reassurance during an inspection of the market’s redevelopment project, which includes the construction of access roads and 200 modern shops.
“Contrary to rumours, we are not planning to evict any of our petty traders after the renovation,” Anazodo said. “We are committed to ensuring that every existing trader is allocated a suitable shop. Owning a proper shop is essential for business growth.”
He also highlighted broader efforts to modernise the market, including the development of motor parks, improved public conveniences, and the removal of lock-up shops from the market’s frontage to enhance accessibility and order.
Business magnate and Chairman of Ibeto Group, Chief Cletus Ibeto, who hails from the area, accompanied Anazodo during the visit. He called on traders to support the council’s vision, pledging his assistance toward the market’s transformation for the benefit of the entire community.

Also speaking, Mr. Chukwudi Oranekwu, Chairman of the Agbedo Market Traders Association, reassured traders that no one would lose their space. He pledged the association’s full support for the local government’s initiative to upgrade the market and stimulate economic growth.
Beyond the market tour, Anazodo inspected the rehabilitation of a nearby bridge and, alongside Ibeto, commissioned a newly constructed culvert at Nnewichi aimed at addressing persistent flooding in the area.
