Journalists Must Be Treated With Respect – IGP Disu Says
Seeks Stronger Police–Media Partnership

Abuja — The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and journalists, stressing that the media must be treated with dignity and recognised as key partners in national development.
Disu made the call on Saturday while speaking at the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory Council in Abuja.
The police chief commended journalists in the FCT for their role in informing the public and contributing to democratic governance, noting that the relationship between the police and the media should be built on mutual respect and professionalism.
“I have always had a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship with journalists. They are professionals who deserve respect and should never be treated as beggars,” he said.
Disu emphasised that stronger cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the media would help improve public trust, enhance the dissemination of accurate security information, and strengthen efforts to maintain peace and order.
He also urged both police officers and journalists to conduct themselves responsibly in their professional engagements, stressing that their actions leave lasting impressions on society.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and described him as a longstanding friend of the media.
Ike expressed confidence in Disu’s leadership of the police force and assured him of the council’s willingness to work closely with the police in ensuring objective reporting of security issues.

She also disclosed that the police chief would be invited as a special guest at the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
The NUJ chairman reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT council to promoting responsible journalism and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening security and good governance in the territory.
