Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw the proposed Tax Reform Bill, warning that it could disproportionately harm the northern region and other parts of the country.
Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Zulum stressed that the bill, if passed, would hinder development in the North, South East, South South, and South West, while primarily benefiting Lagos State.
“The Tax Reform Bill will cause setbacks for the North and other regions,” Zulum said. “States like Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo will also face significant challenges.”
He noted that although there are claims the bill may disadvantage Lagos, he clarified that his position is not aimed at causing harm to the state.
Zulum urged President Tinubu to reconsider the bill, emphasizing the strong support the northern region has given him, with 60% of his electoral votes coming from the area.
He rejected any narrative suggesting a lack of northern support for the president, describing such claims as unfounded.
“The North’s appeal is straightforward: withdraw this bill,” Zulum said. “It’s important for national unity and balanced development.”
The governor’s remarks underscore growing concerns about the potential regional implications of the proposed tax reforms.
