The Ministry of Water Resources, in collaboration with UNICEF has inaugurated the National Technical Working Group (TWG) on Climate Resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), marking a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by climate change to Nigeria’s WASH sector.
In his keynote address delivered on Wednesday in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, represented by Permanent Secretary Mr. Richard Pheelagwah, underscored the pivotal role of the WASH sector in ensuring human well-being and sustainable development.
He emphasized that “Access to potable water, adequate sanitation, and optimal hygiene practices are fundamental pillars of a dignified existence and a thriving society.”
Prof. Utsev expressed apprehension regarding the detrimental impacts of climate change on WASH services, drawing attention to Nigeria’s susceptibility to water and sanitation-related challenges.
He delineated the TWG’s mandate to formulate climate-resilient strategies across all geopolitical zones and hydrological regions, ensuring the durability of boreholes, latrines, and hygiene protocols against climate-induced adversities for future generations.
He further underscored that “The establishment of a Technical Working Group is only a starting point. What is required is unwavering dedication, seamless cooperation, and a unified vision. This platform will facilitate partnerships among governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, the corporate sector, and development allies to bolster the resilience of the WASH sector.”
The Minister reiterated the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to earmarking resources, enacting pertinent policies, and fostering an enabling environment for enhancing the resilience of the WASH sector.
He urged TWG members to mobilize resources, raise awareness, enhance capacities, and ensure transparency regarding WASH and climate change concerns.
UNICEF WASH Manager Mr. Chiranjibi Tiwari conveyed a goodwill message, reaffirming UNICEF’s dedication to Nigeria’s progress through investments in infrastructure and inclusive WASH services.
He accentuated the organization’s resolve to engage with local communities to guarantee access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
Engr. Ngozi Abohwo, Director of Hydrology at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, represented by Deputy Director Mr. Robert Umezulike, extended a warm welcome to the participants and underscored the significance of the WASH sector in preserving individual dignity and well-being. Abohwo underscored the urgent necessity for sustainable WASH development in light of climate change, which poses threats to water availability and exacerbates extreme weather events.
Mr. Kolawole Banwo, representing the Country Director of WaterAid, expressed enthusiasm for engaging in the TWG, underscoring the organization’s dedication to exploring technological solutions for WASH and initiating a documentary for advocacy and enlightenment purposes.
The newly established National Technical Working Group on Climate Resilient WASH brings together key stakeholders from governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, the corporate sector, and development partners. Its primary objective is to bolster the adaptation and resilience of WASH services in both developmental and humanitarian contexts.
The inauguration culminated in the formal induction of TWG members, heralding the commencement of a transformative expedition for WASH services in Nigeria.
