The Federal Government, under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has unveiled plans to promptly initiate the enhancement of the Alau Dam in Maiduguri.
This strategic move is geared towards addressing the persistent challenges stemming from the dam’s overflow and delivering a lasting solution to the recurrent flood crises in the region.
Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, made this commitment during a visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, accompanied by the Honourable Minister of State, Rt. Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo.
The ministerial delegation, comprising technical directors, water specialists, agency heads, and senior government officials, conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the recent floods in Maiduguri, which resulted in the displacement of residents, submersion of farmlands and homes, and disruption of economic activities.
Prof. Utsev affirmed that a team of experts from the Ministry is already on-ground in Borno State, conducting a thorough assessment of the Alau Dam’s current state to propose immediate measures for enhancing its capacity.
“We are fully dedicated to a meticulous overhaul of this indispensable infrastructure. The enhancement of the Alau Dam is imperative, and any inefficiency by contractors or officials involved will be met with consequences. Sanctions will be imposed for any delays or substandard work,” emphasized the Minister.
He further assured the public that in conjunction with the dam upgrade, concerted efforts would be made to mitigate the spread of waterborne diseases in collaboration with the state government.
Prof. Utsev disclosed that sanitation provisions and water treatment facilities would be extended to displaced individuals as part of the Ministry’s prompt intervention.
The Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed gratitude to the Ministers and their team for their swift response and assistance during this critical period.
He underscored the necessity of conducting a detailed assessment of the dam to evaluate its capacity, establish hydraulic structures, and improve flood forecasting mechanisms.
Governor Zulum also emphasized the urgent requirement to combat desertification, invest in sustainable energy sources, and enhance irrigation systems to counteract the escalating impacts of climate change.
During their visit, the Ministers engaged with the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al Amin El-Kanemi CFR, to convey their solidarity with the people of Borno and extend sympathies for the recent flooding that affected the Shehu’s palace.
Prof. Utsev elucidated that the Ministry’s delayed arrival was due to prior irrigation inspections in the South West but assured that the enhancement of the Alau Dam would be prioritized.
He further pledged to augment the dam’s capacity, refine water treatment processes, and elevate sanitation practices in the region.
The Minister also implored the Shehu to counsel local residents, particularly children, against indulging in contaminated water, which poses health hazards such as reptile encounters and the propagation of waterborne illnesses.
The Shehu recollected a similar flood incident nearly three decades ago, noting that the present devastation surpasses that of the past. He expressed appreciation for the Federal and State governments’ attention to the matter and emphasized the significance of upgrading the dam to avert future calamities.
Following their audience with the Shehu, the Ministers and their entourage inspected flood-affected areas in Maiduguri to evaluate the full extent of the damage.
