The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, announced that the number of documented fatalities resulting from the Cholera outbreak in the state has now reached twenty-one, following the latest report which indicated three hundred and fifty suspected cases and fifteen deaths.
Mrs. Ogunyemi made this revelation while providing an update on the outbreak subsequent to a meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, PHEOC.
She further mentioned that the total number of cholera cases has surged to four hundred and one throughout Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa reporting the most significant figures.
Mrs. Ogunyemi attributed the spike in cases to the recent Ileya festivities that saw large congregations gathering.
Despite this, she highlighted that suspected cases are on the decline in various Local Government Areas (LGAs), especially in previously affected regions, as a result of the interventions and surveillance efforts by the state government.
The Special Adviser emphasized that the Lagos State Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other affiliated agencies, is upholding meticulous surveillance and monitoring of the situation, while implementing strategic programs and initiatives to contain the spread.
