Senator (Dr.) Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has spent ₦101 million to cover university tuition fees for 549 students over two academic sessions, as part of efforts to ease the financial burden of higher education on families.
The scholarship scheme supported 223 students with ₦37 million during the 2024/2025 academic session, while 326 students received ₦67 million in the 2025/2026 session.
The intervention were disclosed in a statement from the senator’s office, which said the intervention was designed to ensure that financial difficulties did not prevent students from pursuing their university education.
Umeh, a member of the 10th National Assembly, has also provided financial assistance to students who approach his office with urgent educational needs outside the formal scholarship programme.
According to the statement, the additional support caters to students facing unexpected financial difficulties, family crises and increases in tuition fees that could disrupt their studies.
The office said the initiative reflected the senator’s commitment to youth empowerment and human capital development, with education positioned as a key investment in the future of Anambra Central.
The intervention comes amid rising living costs and growing financial pressures on Nigerian households, which have made it increasingly difficult for many families to meet the cost of university education.
The statement added that the scholarship programme was part of Umeh’s grassroots-oriented approach to representation, with a focus on providing practical assistance to constituents.
