About 10,000 pupils in Lagos Island Constituency I have benefited from an educational support initiative providing school bags, stationery and other learning materials to ease the financial burden on parents and improve access to education.
The beneficiaries received the materials under the Renewed Hope Back-to-School Project, organised by the constituency’s representative, Princess Omolara Oyekan-Olumegbon, at the fourth edition of the programme held on Friday at Dr Teslim Elias Primary School, Oja Oba, Isale Eko, Lagos Island.
The initiative, according to a statement by the organisers on Monday, is designed to encourage school attendance, support children’s academic development and assist families, particularly those from low-income households, with essential educational materials.
Oyekan-Olumegbon said the project reflected her commitment to improving the welfare of children, youths and women, stressing that education remained a critical investment in society’s future.
She said the initiative fulfilled a promise she made upon assuming office in 2023 to introduce practical interventions that address residents’ needs and create opportunities for vulnerable members of the community.
According to her, the project has grown from its inaugural edition, which reached 170 pupils, to a programme covering beneficiaries across the 10 wards of the constituency.
The lawmaker added that the back-to-school initiative was one of 16 programmes she undertook annually to support her constituents, expressing her intention to expand the number if re-elected in the 2027 general elections.
She appreciated community leaders, traditional rulers, political leaders, the Local Government Education Authority, partners and other supporters for sustaining the programme.
Oyekan-Olumegbon also urged parents and teachers to ensure that the pupils retained and properly used the materials provided.
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, commended the initiative for its continued support for pupils and their families.
Hamzat, represented by Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, the APC deputy governorship candidate, urged the pupils to take their studies seriously, respect their parents and teachers, and shun truancy, cultism and drug abuse.
He also called on parents and guardians to remain actively involved in their children’s education, while urging teachers to provide the guidance and support needed to develop disciplined and academically successful pupils.
Similarly, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Director-General of the Lagos State APC Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections, said the initiative aligned with the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, particularly its focus on education and the development of Lagos State.
He said the programme demonstrated the lawmaker’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving educational access, empowering young people and strengthening family welfare in Lagos Island Constituency I and beyond.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Abisola Adegbite, also commended the project for providing essential learning materials and reducing the financial pressure on parents.

Adegbite, represented by the Director of Basic Education, Mrs Bosede Adumasi, stressed that supporting children’s education required collective responsibility among government institutions, parents, teachers and other stakeholders.
She urged stakeholders to sustain their contributions towards expanding learning opportunities and improving educational outcomes for the next generation.
