The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been awarded a Doctor of Laws (PhD) by University of Calabar during its 38th Convocation Ceremony, with his doctoral research ranked among the institution’s most outstanding contributions to knowledge.
Kalu’s research was selected for the university’s Achievement Exhibition on Contribution to Knowledge, underscoring its academic excellence and national relevance.
Speaking while delivering the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the PhD graduating class, the Deputy Speaker described the doctoral journey as “demanding, humbling, and transformative,” highlighting the sacrifices and perseverance required to attain the highest academic qualification.
Quoting Greek philosopher Aristotle, he said, “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet,” noting that behind every thesis lies sleepless nights and intense intellectual effort.
Kalu described the achievement as both personal and symbolic, recalling that the University of Calabar shaped his academic path, having earlier obtained his LL.B and LL.M degrees from the same institution.
He emphasized that earning a PhD is not merely about acquiring a title but accepting a higher responsibility to society. Referencing global icon Nelson Mandela, he stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
The lawmaker also cited data from the National Bureau of Statistics, which estimates that fewer than 100,000 Nigerians hold doctoral degrees in a population exceeding 220 million. He said this places PhD holders in a “narrow community” bound not just by privilege but by a duty to provide intellectual leadership.
Highlighting his legislative efforts, Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to education through proposed institutions, including the Federal College of Education, Bende; Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item Bende; and Federal University, Okigwe.
He described these initiatives as long-term investments in Nigeria’s intellectual and human capital development rather than mere political achievements.

Kalu urged fellow graduands to translate their research into practical solutions that address societal challenges, stressing the need to bridge the gap between knowledge and real-world impact.
He expressed appreciation to the university’s Governing Council, Senate, academic staff, and supervisors for recognizing his work as one of the most outstanding contributions at the convocation.
