The Federal Government has raised alarm over what it described as the growing and disturbing trend of Nigerian citizens being illegally recruited to fight in foreign armed conflicts under false pretences.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed grave concern over recent media investigations and security reports indicating that some Nigerians were lured abroad with promises of lucrative employment, security jobs, educational opportunities, and migration incentives, only to be deployed to combat zones.
According to the Ministry, victims were allegedly misled and coerced into signing military service contracts, in some cases written in foreign languages without proper legal guidance. It further disclosed that travel documents of recruits were reportedly confiscated upon arrival in host countries, leaving them vulnerable and with limited options.
The government also noted that deceptive recruitment tactics often include promises of high monthly salaries, signing bonuses, and fast-tracked citizenship. Some intermediaries and agents were said to have facilitated the process by arranging travel under tourist or other non-military visa categories.
The Federal Government unequivocally warned Nigerians against accepting any offer that involves participation in foreign armed conflicts, stressing that such actions not only endanger lives but may also contravene Nigerian and international laws regulating mercenary activities and foreign enlistment.
“The Ministry wishes to emphasize that Nigerians who choose to participate in foreign conflicts outside approved governmental frameworks do so at their own risk,” the statement said.
To curb the development, the government said it is engaging relevant domestic and international partners to investigate the matter and intensify public awareness on the dangers of illegal recruitment. Nigerian missions abroad have also been directed to strengthen consular vigilance and provide timely advisory services to citizens.

The Ministry called on parents, guardians, community leaders, and educational institutions to sensitize young Nigerians about the risks associated with deceptive foreign recruitment schemes. It advised citizens to verify overseas employment and study opportunities through official government channels and to report suspicious recruitment activities to the appropriate authorities.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians at home and abroad, the government maintained that its citizens must not be exploited or trafficked into foreign conflicts under any circumstances.
