The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced a large-scale bulk waste evacuation at Alaba Rago along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, targeting illegal dump sites in a renewed push to restore environmental sanity and safeguard public health along the busy corridor.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed on Saturday that the agency’s Operations Team had deployed bulk waste carriers, loaders and support personnel to clear accumulated refuse in the area. He explained that the intervention is part of a structured corridor-cleaning strategy designed to tackle recurring indiscriminate dumping and environmental degradation.
According to him, following the clean-up at Alaba Rago, the operation will extend to Okokomaiko and the median around Lagos State University (LASU), identified as priority locations due to heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic as well as persistent sanitation challenges.
He further revealed that the exercise would subsequently move from Agric Bus Stop toward Mile 2, ensuring a systematic restoration of environmental standards across the entire Lagos–Badagry Expressway axis.

Dr. Gbadegesin stressed that the evacuation exercise is not a one-off intervention but part of a sustained sanitation framework. The strategy, he noted, includes continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement with traders and residents, intensified public sensitisation campaigns, and stricter enforcement measures to prevent a recurrence of illegal dumping.
Reaffirming LAWMA’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner Lagos, the MD urged residents, traders and motorists to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly along highways and road medians. He assured that enforcement and surveillance would be strengthened to sustain cleanliness along the corridor and protect public health.
