The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act to allow the electronic transmission of election results, introducing a major step towards modernizing the country’s electoral process. However, the amendment stops short of making electronic transmission mandatory, instead providing an alternative method in cases of network failure.
Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North) explained that the Senate’s reversal of its earlier rejection of electronic transmission was driven by the need to align the law with the aspirations of Nigerians. “This amendment is to bring our laws to make it a replica of the wishes and aspirations of the people,” he said.

The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Abba Moro, and subsequently passed by a voice vote under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, receiving support from the majority of lawmakers.
The amendment is expected to enhance transparency in Nigeria’s elections while retaining safeguards to ensure results can still be reported manually if technical challenges arise.
