Nigeria Govt, China Reaffirm Strategic Partnership, Deepen Diplomatic, Institutional Cooperation
Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with renewed focus on diplomacy, institutional collaboration and people-to-people exchanges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs restated Nigeria’s position during a courtesy visit by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Zhou Hongyou, to the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Tuesday, 3 February 2026.
During the meeting, both sides underscored the depth of Nigeria–China relations, highlighting long-standing cooperation in trade, infrastructure development and broader strategic partnerships. Nigeria was described as one of China’s most significant partners in Africa, with Chinese-supported projects visible across key sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Discussions also centred on the importance of reciprocal visits, study tours and diplomatic exposure programmes to strengthen mutual understanding. Emphasis was placed on short-term and specialised training in governance, administration, strategic communication and public diplomacy, including initiatives coordinated by Chinese academic institutions such as Peking University to promote experience-sharing among developing countries.
The Chinese delegation further disclosed plans to commemorate the Chinese New Year alongside the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries. Both parties agreed to coordinate media engagement and public messaging on 10 February 2026 to reinforce public awareness and understanding of Nigeria–China relations.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared commitment by Nigeria and China to deepen diplomatic engagement, enhance institutional cooperation and expand people-to-people exchanges in pursuit of mutual development and long-term partnership.
