Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Saturday defeated the Desert Foxes of Algeria 2–0 to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently taking place in Morocco.
The quarter-final encounter was played at the 45,000-capacity Grand Stade de Marrakech, where Nigeria started on a positive note and controlled much of the early exchanges.
The Super Eagles dictated the tempo of the game and created a number of scoring opportunities, putting the Algerian defence under sustained pressure.
Despite Nigeria’s dominance in the first half, both teams went into the break on level terms, with Algeria managing to keep the scoreline goalless through disciplined defending.
Nigeria broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart when Victor Osimhen headed home a cross from the left flank delivered by Bruno Onyemaechi, giving the Super Eagles a 1–0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the advantage was doubled as Osimhen provided the assist for Akor Adams. The forward rounded Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane before calmly finishing into an empty net to make it 2–0.
The result confirmed Nigeria’s progression to the semi-finals of the tournament. The Super Eagles will now face tournament hosts Morocco in the semi-final match scheduled for Wednesday night, January 14, 2026.
