Prof. Oby Orogbu, a member of the House of Representatives (LP–Anambra) representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency, has reaffirmed that women possess the capacity to deliver good governance and drive socio-economic development in Nigeria.
Speaking at an empowerment programme for 500 widows in her constituency on Friday, tagged ‘Ego Afia’ and held in celebration of her birthday, Orogbu called for greater female participation in the nation’s legislative process.
She noted with concern that Nigeria currently has only four female senators and 14 female members of the House of Representatives, describing the figures as alarmingly low.
“Women are not just voters or supporters; they are leaders, policymakers, and agents of positive change,” Orogbu said. “They have the capacity to deliver the dividends of democracy. For Nigeria to achieve meaningful development and social equity, women must be fully involved in politics and lawmaking.”
Highlighting the significance of the empowerment scheme, Orogbu said the initiative aims to foster economic self-reliance, alleviate poverty, and strengthen community development.

She also showcased some completed constituency projects and expressed gratitude to her supporters, pledging continued interventions to uplift local communities.
Beneficiaries of the programme expressed appreciation for the financial support. Mrs. Chiamaka Ezennwa, a widow from Urum community, said the cash gift would help grow her business and support her children. Another widow, Mrs. Judith Akaorah from Ebenebe, said the assistance would ease the burden of current economic hardships.
