…pays tribute to Nigeria’s youngest-ever Speaker, hails his principled stand for democracy

Abuja — The Nigerian Senate on Thursday paid glowing tributes to the late Rt. Hon. Chief Agunwa Anaekwe, OFR, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, who died on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the age of 69.
The solemn session was sparked by a motion sponsored by Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and co-sponsored by six others across the country’s geopolitical zones, highlighting Anaekwe’s contributions to democratic governance and national development.
In the motion, the Senate noted with “deep sorrow” the passing of the late Chief Anaekwe, who made history in 1992 when, at just 36 years old, he became the youngest Nigerian ever elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the Third Republic.
Lawmakers recalled his courageous and principled leadership during a turbulent era in Nigeria’s political history, where he resisted anti-democratic forces and safeguarded the independence of the Legislature. Though his tenure was cut short following the military dissolution of democratic institutions on November 17, 1993, senators agreed his legacy continues to inspire legislators across the nation.
The Senate also acknowledged Anaekwe’s post-parliamentary roles, including his service as a member of the APC National Caucus and National Executive Council (Ex-Officio), his legal and administrative expertise, and his continued engagement in nation-building efforts through political mentoring and advocacy for justice and democracy.
In its resolutions, the Senate:
Observed a minute of silence in his honour;
Mandated a delegation to visit the bereaved family, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Governor of Anambra State;
Proposed the establishment of a joint planning committee with the House of Representatives for the late Speaker’s state funeral;
Urged the Federal Government to immortalise Chief Anaekwe by naming a national institution or edifice after him, in recognition of his patriotism and service to Nigeria.

Senators across party lines commended Anaekwe’s integrity, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the democratic project, describing him as “a statesman who stood tall in turbulent times.”
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Senator Mohammed Monguno (Borno North), and Senator Kamorudeen Oyewumi (Osun West) were among those who spoke in strong support of the motion, underscoring Anaekwe’s rare legacy as a symbol of youthful leadership, courage, and democratic ideals.
