Lagos, Nigeria — Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to employee safety, wellbeing, and digital transformation, as it marked the 22nd World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
In a statement signed by Aveek Biswas, Head of Corporate Communications, the company announced a successful conclusion to a week-long series of safety-centric activities under the theme: “Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work.” The events wrapped up on April 26, ahead of the global observance date of April 28, 2025.
SEEPCO, one of Africa’s fastest-growing oil exploration and production companies, engaged its workforce across various operational locations in activities including a health walk, a thematic lecture on AI in workplace safety, safety leadership demonstrations, health awareness talks, and site-specific risk education. These efforts aimed to deepen employee engagement while underscoring the growing role of technology in fostering a safer work environment.
The company’s Health, Safety, Environment, and Fire (HSEF) teams had already made impactful strides through the year, conducting campaigns focused on high-risk areas such as construction safety, fire drills, confined space entry, and seasonal risks including lightning protection. Proactive measures like alcohol testing for accident prevention and awareness programs for working at heights were also central to SEEPCO’s year-round strategy.
Culminating this year’s observance, SEEPCO unveiled a forward-looking plan to digitally transform its health and safety framework. The rollout includes a real-time digital incident reporting system, an AI-powered Unsafe Act and Unsafe Condition (UAUC) reporting tool, and a fully digitized e-Permit to Work (PTW) system. These tools are designed to enhance compliance, visibility, and rapid response across its operations.
“These digital platforms are not merely automation tools; they are instruments of empowerment,” the company said. “They equip every employee with the capability to prevent harm, make informed decisions, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.”
SEEPCO is also investing in advanced data analytics and predictive monitoring technologies, setting a new benchmark for safety standards in Nigeria’s energy sector. This approach aims to anticipate incidents before they occur—transforming safety from a reactive protocol into a proactive culture.
As part of its professional development strategy, SEEPCO delivered specialized safety training through globally recognized institutions. A highlight was a National Training Course on Nucleonic Gauging Equipment, Well Logging, Waste Management, and Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORMs), conducted at the University of Ibadan’s National Institute of Radiation Protection and Research (NIRPR), certifying staff as Radiation Safety Officers.
To strengthen environmental stewardship, the company trained 50 employees in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management Awareness, boosting internal capacity for compliance with emerging sustainability regulations. In addition, a joint emergency response drill with the Lagos State Fire Service bolstered SEEPCO’s readiness for critical incidents, reinforcing inter-agency collaboration.
