Directors in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare have been urged to uphold the principles of effective service delivery and succession planning to ensure sustainable progress within Nigeria’s health sector.
This call was made during the 2025 Retreat for Health Directors, emphasizing the critical role of leadership in achieving the Ministry’s mandate. The retreat, held at Enugu, aimed to strengthen leadership capacities for efficient governance in health and social welfare.
According to a press statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Daju Kachollom, mni, addressed the Directors, highlighting the importance of the retreat in enhancing service delivery and ensuring continuity in leadership.
Themed “Strengthening Leadership for Effective and Efficient Health and Social Welfare Governance,” the retreat focused on strategic planning to evaluate the Ministry’s current position, set long-term goals, and outline steps to achieve them.
Kachollom emphasized that the retreat would also foster team building, improve interpersonal relationships, enhance communication, and create a collaborative work environment.
Defining leadership as the driving force behind organizational success, she urged Directors to prioritize transparency, embrace innovation, foster partnerships, and build empowered, sustainable teams. These efforts, she noted, are essential for maintaining an efficient and effective health system.
“In this regard, we must fully embrace the ongoing reforms and take ownership of them. We must adopt the principles of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (2021–2025), with particular focus on the new Performance Management System (PMS), which tracks both individual and collective contributions to ministerial and national development goals. At its core, performance management aligns personal objectives with organizational targets, ensuring unified direction,” she stated.

Kachollom encouraged Directors to prioritize mentoring and succession planning, describing these initiatives as essential for sustaining the Ministry’s achievements and preparing future leaders.
A key highlight of the retreat was a series of PowerPoint presentations by participating Directors, reaffirming top management’s commitment to enhancing leadership skills, addressing sector challenges, and developing practical solutions for sustainable progress.
