Senator Mpigi Honors Late Hero Saro-Wiwa, Praises President Tinubu for Signing Federal University of Environmental Technology into Law

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Senator Mpigi Barinada, has paid tribute to the late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, stating that the approval of a Federal University of Environmental Technology in Ogoniland aligns with the aspirations of the region’s past heroes.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Senator Mpigi expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for signing the bill into law. He remarked that Saro-Wiwa, who fought tirelessly for the rights of the Ogoni people, would be “smiling in his grave” at this milestone achievement.
The senator, who represents Rivers South-East Senatorial District, commended President Tinubu for addressing the long-standing educational and environmental concerns of the Ogoni people and the Niger Delta at large.
“This is a significant step towards justice and development,” Mpigi said. “What the late Ken Saro-Wiwa stood for was the upliftment of Ogoniland and its people. With this action, even our past heroes would be smiling in their graves.”
As the sponsor of the bill, Senator Mpigi emphasized that this victory was a collective achievement, reflecting the resilience of the Ogoni people and the unwavering support of their leaders.
“This achievement is not mine alone but a testament to the voices of our communities, the determination of our people, and the unity of our leaders. The sacrifices of our heroes past now rest on our shoulders, and we must uphold this beacon of hope for future generations.”
He urged the Ogoni people to embrace peace and unity, calling for patience as the region continues its dialogue on critical issues.
“I call on my people to sheath their swords and remain peaceful yet vigilant. The journey toward justice and development is ongoing, and our collective resolve will determine our victory. We must stay united and focused on the bigger picture.”
Senator Mpigi also pledged his continued advocacy for the Ogoni people.

He further acknowledged the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, for their invaluable support in ensuring the swift passage of the bill.
“Their dedication to national development and responsiveness to the aspirations of the Ogoni people have been instrumental in making this long-standing dream a reality.”
Additionally, Senator Mpigi recognized the contributions of former Governor Nyesom Wike, whose guidance, he said, was crucial in achieving this milestone.
With the Federal University of Environmental Technology now established in Ogoniland, hopes are high for enhanced educational and environmental progress in the region, honoring the legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other past heroes.
