70th Birthday Book Launch: Gbenga Daniel Warns Misinformation Is Stalling Nigeria’s Development

By Fatima Saka

Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel has identified misinformation and poor access to credible data as one of the most critical challenges hindering Nigeria’s development, as he marked his 70th birthday with the launch of four books chronicling his life and public service.

Speaking at a high-profile event attended by dignitaries, traditional rulers, and security chiefs, the former Ogun State governor stressed that the prevalence of “deliberate misinformation and disinformation” continues to distort public perception and weaken governance.

He warned that many Nigerians, including members of the elite, often rely on incomplete or manipulated information, leading to flawed political decisions and national discourse.

> “One of the critical issues that has arrested and held down our society is the lack of credible information… perspectives are shaped by ignorance, doctored narratives, or half-truths,” he said.

The event also featured the unveiling of four books: “Daniel in the Lion’s Den,” “Otunba Gbenga Daniel in the Eyes of Time,” “My March Through the Courts,” and “Path to Justice,” which reflect his personal journey, legal battles, and political trajectory.

Daniel, who currently represents Ogun East Senatorial District, expressed gratitude for his life, health, and opportunities to serve Nigeria in various capacities, including his tenure as governor from 2003 to 2011.

He also acknowledged the support and leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a pragmatic leader whose governance style has influenced many political actors.

The ceremony drew prominent personalities, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, who co-chaired the occasion, alongside other traditional rulers and dignitaries from across the country.

Daniel used the platform to call for a renewed commitment to truth, integrity, and responsible information dissemination, noting that national progress depends heavily on an informed and enlightened citizenry.
