As Nigerians join the rest of the world to commemorate International Workers’ Day, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has commended the resilience of Nigerian workers while raising concerns about press freedom and the broader civic space in the face of economic hardship.
In her May Day address, Ike aligned with this year’s theme—“Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”—highlighting the growing struggles faced by workers, especially journalists, due to Nigeria’s worsening economic climate.
“Workers’ Day is not just a moment to celebrate labour; it is a call to reaffirm our commitment to defending the civic space—where every voice is heard, truth prevails, and rights are upheld,” she said.
Ike pointed to rising inflation, job insecurity, and shrinking professional opportunities as key challenges confronting workers. She warned that these economic pressures do more than strain livelihoods—they risk undermining the freedoms that sustain Nigeria’s democratic fabric.
“At a time like this, the role of the media is critical. Journalists must continue to speak truth to power, amplify the voices of the vulnerable, and resist all forms of censorship,” she stated. “We must stand firm in defending press freedom and advocating for just and equitable workplaces.”
The NUJ FCT Chair further called on government bodies, private employers, and civil society to take concrete steps in improving working conditions and safeguarding fundamental rights.
“Economic hardship must not be an excuse to erode our freedoms or silence dissent,” she stressed. “Instead, let our shared struggles inspire collective action toward a more just and inclusive Nigeria—where every worker has a real chance to thrive.”
As the first woman to lead the NUJ FCT Council, Ike concluded with a passionate plea for solidarity and reform.
“On this Workers’ Day, I urge all stakeholders to stand with us—support journalists, defend civic space, and invest in our people. Let the sacrifices of Nigerian workers translate into genuine progress for our nation.”
