2025 NCE: FG Assures Stronger Environmental Policy, Sustainability Outcomes in Nigeria
The Federal Government has assured stakeholders that resolutions from the 18th National Council on Environment (NCE) will strengthen Nigeria’s environmental policy direction and advance sustainability across the country.
The assurance was given by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mahmud Adam Kambari, at the opening of the technical session of the 18th NCE meeting on Monday, December 15, 2025, in Katsina, Katsina State.
Kambari said the National Council on Environment, as the highest environmental policy-making body in the country, provides a critical platform for the Federal Government, state governments and key stakeholders to assess progress, address emerging challenges and adopt resolutions that will shape national environmental governance.
According to him, the council’s deliberations are expected to reinforce coordinated action and policy coherence in tackling Nigeria’s environmental challenges.
He explained that the theme of this year’s council, “Tackling the Triple Planetary Crisis of Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution for Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” underscores the collective urgency required to confront environmental threats that endanger ecosystems, food security, public health and the nation’s sustainable development goals.
Kambari commended the Katsina State Government and its people for their hospitality and collaboration in hosting the meeting. He also praised the Minister of Environment for his leadership, as well as state commissioners of environment, development partners and other stakeholders for their continued commitment to environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Head of Service of Katsina State and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Falalu Bawale, said the turnout of participants reflected a shared resolve to promote environmental sustainability and deploy professional expertise to protect and manage the environment effectively.
Bawale expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Environment for selecting Katsina State as host of the national forum, describing the National Council on Environment as one of the most strategic policy platforms for dialogue, policy harmonisation and targeted interventions in the environmental sector.

He noted that the council would also expose the state to best practices in environmental resilience and climate change compliance.
The 18th National Council on Environment is scheduled to be formally declared open by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.
