The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary system, arguing that it would allow for more precise funding projections and better resource allocation.
Speaking during the 2025 budget defence before the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, by chaired Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori – Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs and his co-chairman, Honourable Makki Yalleman, House Committee on Police Affairs.
Egbetokun emphasized that a flexible budgeting approach would ensure adequate funding for the Force’s operational needs.
He also advocated for the approval of a Special Operations Account dedicated solely to national security emergencies. Additionally, he urged an increase in allocations for Overhead and Capital Expenditure, which he said were crucial for improving the Force’s effectiveness.
As part of his budget proposal, the IGP recommended funding for the construction of five new zonal headquarters and the enhancement of tactical units vital to internal security. He further called for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions, stressing the importance of capacity building and professional development within the Force.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP also underscored the necessity of prompt and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 to ensure the smooth functioning of the police force.

“The Inspector-General of Police expressed his gratitude to the Joint Committees for their engagement during this critical budgetary session. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to working collaboratively with the committees to reposition the NPF, aligning it with the shared vision of a secure and stable nation,” the statement read.
The IGP was accompanied by the Force Management Team and other senior officers.
