The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, along with Engr. Abubakar Momoh from the Ministry of Niger Delta, marked the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem has emphasizied on the crucial role of mangroves in coastal protection, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.
During the commemorative event, the ministers actively participated in planting mangroves at the Bomu Waterfront in Ogoniland, Rivers State.
The minister highlighted that mangrove ecosystems serve as natural barriers against storms and erosion, exhibit carbon sequestration rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests, and function as vital nurseries for numerous marine species.
He underscored that mangroves transcend mere trees; they stand as guardians of coastlines, defenders against climate change, and sources of livelihood for millions. The commemoration not only bolsters climate resilience but also provides support to local communities by offering natural protection against climate change, as well as resources like medicine and food.
The Minister pointed out that July 26 is designated as the International Day for the conservation of the mangrove ecosystem, emphasizing the extensive mangrove restoration efforts being undertaken by HYPREP, which represents the largest restoration of oil-degraded mangroves globally.
“We have successfully planted 514,819 mangrove seedlings thus far. In addition to restoring mangroves through assisted planting, it is imperative to reduce the pressure from mangrove harvesting.
Consequently, this year’s World Mangrove Day is commemorated through two significant initiatives. We are introducing Growcoon as a sustainable alternative to the utilization of single-use plastics for nurturing mangrove seedlings,” he added.
Balarabe urged the community to ensure the protection of the mangrove seedlings and encouraged the planting of mangrove trees for the collective benefit of the community, the people of the Niger Delta, and the nation at large.
Earlier, the Minister from the Niger Delta Ministry, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, advised the residents of the Niger Delta to increase tree planting efforts to safeguard the environment and ecosystem.
